Effect of buctril super (Bromoxynil) herbicide on soil microbial biomass and bacterial population BABT

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of bromoxynil herbicide on soil microorganisms, with the hypothesis that this herbicide caused suppression in microbial activity and biomass by exerting toxic effect on them. Nine sites of Punjab province (Pakistan) those had been exposed to bromoxynil herbicide for about last ten years designated as soil 'A' were surveyed in 2011 and samples were collected and analyzed for Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), Biomass Nitrogen (MBN), Biomass Phosphorus (MBP) and bacterial population. Use of Pseudomonas stutzeri and Candida utilis in the improvement of the conditions of Artemia culture and protection against pathogens BJM

To evaluate the effect of two bacterial strains isolated from Artemia cysts and yeast (Candida utilis) on the survival, growth and total biomass production of its larvae, challenge tests were performed with Candida utilis, Pseudomonas stutzeri and Pasteurella haemolityca. In addition, a pathogenic strain of Vibrio alginolyticus was tested for comparative purposes. Pseudomonas stutzeri and Candida utilis have no impact on survival, but enhance growth and total biomass production of the larvae. However, we noted that Pasteurella haemolityca affect negatively Artemia larvae. Bacterial Dynamics in a Microphytobenthic Biofilm: a Tidal Mesocosm Approach ArchiMer

In intertidal mudflats, during low tide exposure, microphytobenthos (MPB) migrate vertically through the surface sediment and form, with the heterotrophic bacteria, a transient biofilm. Inside this biofilm, multiple interactions exist between MPB and bacteria. These micro-organisms secrete a wide range of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which are major components of the biofilm matrix. In this study, we used a tidal mesocosm experiment in order to decipher the interactions of the MPB-EPS-bacteria complex within the biofilm. The spore production "in vitro" of 43 combinations of agroindustrial by-products (cheese whey, silkworm flour, soybean protein and foder yeast) was evaluated. All media tested showed to be suitable for Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki Berliner production and the concentration of spores obtained in these media varied from 10(6) to 10(9) spores/ml.

This study had analyzed the antibacterial, antifungal and trypanocidal activity of the essential oils from Cinnamodendron dinisii Schwacke (Canellaceae) and Siparuna guianensis Aublet (Siparunaceae). The essential oils were obtained from fresh leaves by hydrodistillation, using a modified Clevenger apparatus. Chemical analysis by gas-liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that these essential oils are rich in monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Direct RAPD evaluation of bacteria without conventional DNA extraction BABT

The present work reports successful DNA amplification of Pantoea agglomerans and Bacillus pumilus through Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). For this, template DNA was obtained without conventional DNA extraction. The procedure was as follows: cultures grown for 20 hours in 5 mL LB medium were centrifuged and the resulting preparation was suspended in TE buffer. After boiling, the cell suspension was diluted and 2.0 µl were used in reactions of 15 µl. The results showed no significant differences among the RAPD profile of the PCR reactions derived from the boiling and phenol extraction methods, suggesting the utilization of this method for genetic population analysis.

Since several years, the French oyster farming copes with high mortality affecting juveniles and some adults of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Studies conducted in the framework of a multidisciplinary project (MOREST) showed that mortality was related to several factors like physiological and genetic status of oyster, pathogens including bacteria of the genus Vibrio, and revealed that the sediment, on which the oyster cages are installed, might play a particular role. This has been suggested because of the concomitance of the mortalities and increased toxic compounds like ammonia and sulphides in the sediment. Se estableció el efecto del cultivo asociado de bacterias probióticas de Lactobacillus acidophilus + Lactobacillus casei, sobre la capacidad de acidificación, firmeza y características sensoriales de una leche fermentada de limón con una proporción de 1,5 % de cada cultivo. Effect of xanthan on the growth of sulphate-reduction bacteria in marine sediments. ArchiMer

Chemical additives are used extensively in the offshore oil industry. For secondary oil recovery, the biopolymer xanthan has been recommended as a viscosifying agent but its use may provoke microbial problems. The effect of adding xanthan to marine sediments on the growth and metabolic activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was studied. In all instances, its addition resulted in an increasing in SRB numbers of up to 250-fold. This was accompanied by a marked increase in the electron transport activity of the sediments when these were incubated under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Abstract Urease from Canavalia ensiformis seeds was the first enzyme ever to be crystallized, in 1926. These proteins, found in plants, bacteria and fungi, present different biological properties including catalytic hydrolysis of urea, and also enzyme-independent activities, such as induction of exocytosis, pro-inflammatory effects, neurotoxicity, antifungal and insecticidal properties. Urease is toxic to insects and fungi per se but part of this toxicity relies on an internal peptide (~11 kDa), which is released upon digestion of the protein by insect enzymes.
